Why Is There No Bail for This Man Accused of Murder in Chicago?

A Chicago resident accused of murdering his former partner and injuring their teenage daughter during a shooting in a mall last weekend has been denied bail at a Cook County courthouse. 49-year-old Honorio Perez is now facing charges of first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a fireman, following the incident at North Riverside Park Mall on Saturday, January 13th. The question is, why has Perez been denied bail, and could a great Chicago murder defense attorney have made a difference?

Why Bail May Be Denied in a Murder Case

Murder, particularly first-degree murder is perhaps the most serious criminal charge you could face and, as such, you’ll require the services of an experienced murder defense attorney who’s known for great success. There’s no room for newly-qualified, green lawyers when you stand accused of a crime that may carry a death penalty. Even before you get to that stage, you’re sure to want an attorney who can maximize your chances of getting bail.

One of the main reasons why bail may be denied is the suspect being considering a flight risk. In the Chicago case mentioned earlier, Perez was found at a bus stop, where he was allegedly planning to board a bus to Mexico. Given the severity of the charges, the judge ruled that Perez should remain incarcerated while awaiting trial. Aside from the murder of Maria Ruiz and injuring her daughter, Perez is alleged to have stalked Ruiz after the breakdown of their relationship, threatening to kill both Ruiz and himself.

The story came to its tragic conclusion when Perez obtained a gun, followed Ruiz and her daughter to a shopping mall, and fired shots into their vehicle. Ruiz was pronounced dead at the scene, while her daughter was injured by flying glass. Perez is said to have fled when the teenager recognized him and announced her intent to call 911.
