A California man has been taken into custody after a long investigation. Police say that he allegedly had child pornography in his possession. We want to bring you this case to highlight some of the things that people who face these charges go through.

Though the 37-year-old was just arrested a few weeks ago, the case began during the summer of 2018. Police say that on July 4, they received a tip that the man had the illegal material and they began to develop probable cause against him. This led to a search warrant being secured. On July 5, officers searched the man and his vehicle. They took electronic devices from him but did not arrest him at the time.

A second search warrant was obtained that allowed law enforcement to examine the items they seized. On January 16 of this year, they say that they found over 100 images “consistent with child exploitation.”

As soon as a person is arrested on child pornography charges, they are facing an uphill battle. Their mugshot flashes on the evening news and they are usually slammed with charges that go above and beyond what the evidence actually supports.

Do you know what can happen?

People facing child pornography charges can often be subject to both state and federal charges. This is because modern technology places much of the evidence on electronic devices sent and received through email and messaging. Because of this, the federal government can claim jurisdiction.

  • Years in prison on mandatory sentences
  • The requirement to register as a sex offender

With these charges, the punishment does not stop after a prison sentence. People who have to register as sex offenders often find it hard to find work or a place to live. Their entire lives are on the internet, a modern age branding for the public to see.
