Currently there is no official research done on California as a state and its usage of the drug, there are federal surveys that outline user behavior in the United States linked to the use of marijuana.

  • Marijuana was the most commonly used illicit drug in the US.
  • In the 12-and-older age group, then there were 22.2 million current marijuana users, which totals approximately 8.3 percent of the US population within this age range.
  • There were 1.8 million current adolescents (ages 12-17) marijuana users (7 percent of this segment of the population).
  • Approximately one in every five adults in the 18-25 age group was estimated to be a current marijuana user (about 19.8 percent of this population).
  • An estimated 6.5 percent of Americans in the 26-and-older age group were current marijuana users.

There are however some statistics available about marijuana sales and arrests within California:

  • Approximately 3 million California residents abused an illegal drug.
  • In 2011, California paid $30 million in imprisonment costs for marijuana-related arrests.
  • California ranks number one in medical marijuana sales in the United States; this market draws an estimated $1.3 billion in sales.
  • Under 2012 and prior cannabis laws, there were average seizures of 413,000 pounds of marijuana.
  • Of all the Californians who needed treatment for substance abuse, about 85 percent didn’t receive it.

The dangers of making marijuana derivatives

Last year there was an explosion in an apartment building in California when an investigation was conducted it was found that the person renting the flat was using it an illegal laboratory to create marijuana honey oil.

To make this marijuana derivative, THC has to be extracted from the drug using butane burners. This makes the whole process highly explosive and can lead to fatalities. In this case, there was one person who lost their lives.

What the law says

In the state of California, it is legal to use and produced marijuana derivatives for personal use up to 4g. Anything above this amount is an illegal offense that can be punished by up to six months in jail.

If you have possession with intent to sell without a license it is classed as a felony. Making marijuana derivatives often use explosive chemicals which is also illegal and could result in a 50000 dollar fine and a seven-year state sentence. Furthermore, if possession of marijuana is more than fifty grams then the fine increases to 250,000 dollars and a five-year state sentence. This increases as the amount possessed increases.
